So.....what exactly would being sponsored by ClimbAddict do for you? Frankly(bad pun intended) - not a lot. You'll get a few items of clothes to wear, and hopefully you'll have them on around other climbers who will then bother you with questions about where you got them(yes, that is our hope). Maybe you'll remember our website address.....cafepress.com/climbaddict, in case you were wondering.... and tell them how we are such fools we gave you free clothes. And they'll drop what their doing to run right home and order something for themselves.....
Sounds awesome, right? No!?
Well, whatever. It's still a chance for you to get some of our designs for absolutely no cost, and though we would be happy if it helped our name to get out there, we're willing to accept the fact that about all we can expect is that you will probably wear the clothes(because they actually do look pretty good, and fit comfortably, too) and some other climbers will notice.....
Maybe, someday, if we get hugely successful, we can offer perks like "real companies" do, and then we can even plaster our name on the things so people won't have to ask where the clothes came from. ("We" is me, by the way; Happiegrrrl. There's nobody else here, in case you were wondering.)
But enough of that. What's the deal, you probably want to know.
The deal is, we want to offer two people a bit of gear. And five others will get a smaller amount. Not asking for anything in return after we hand over the stuff. "Sounds great - I'm there!" you are probably saying to yourself. I know I....I mean we....would be saying that to ourselves. But getting there, you see..... In order to get there, you'll have to fork over.
"Fork over what?" you ask.
Well, we'll tell you. Finally.....
In order to choose the chosen ones, we would like to get an idea of just who you are. After all, we don't really want to find out our clothes went to a 600lb. old man who works security on the night shift at a Velvet Elvis painting sweatshop, keeping hordes of smuggled aliens hard at work, painting by the numbers. Someone like that probably doesn't get out and climb much, we think.
We'd prefer if our products went to people who represent what is the best of the best in the lifestyle that climbing is.
To us - climbing is about community. At the most basic level, the community of two partners. But also the camaraderie at the crag, around the campfire, at the local gear shop, and within the world at large. Climbing is also about stewardship. Finding the right balance between providing access and not creating unnecessary impact. Developing areas as much as a service for those who might climb our routes as for the joy the FA brings. Passing down the folklore. Thanks to the internet, stories like those that went round at campfires now get around the world as soon as the parties return from trips; sometimes even the very same day, thanks to wireless technology.
So - we would like to hear from you. What makes YOU a good representative as a citizen of the climbing universe? We aren't looking for the ones who climb the hardest routes or pull the most improbable routes out of thin air. (They're not interested in ClimbAddict and our wimpy offering anyway! But - if you do happen to climb hard and like to take the path of least existence on FA's, well....don't let that stop you from writing to us.)
Tell us about what climbing means to you; what you do to be a good steward for this lifestyle. Does that mean keeping to yourself and onsighting lines nobody else will ever know went before? Or lending a hand at Access Fund Adopt-a-Crag days? Helping the young guns get their start? Belaying for the old dad's, hoping to glean those stories firsthand and maybe a chance to get on the sharp end? Bringing an extra bag along when you hit the trails so you can put litter in it's proper place?
Whatever it is, for you, is what we hope you will convey. This isn't a beauty contest. If someone's out to win under the Miss Congeniality mask, someone had better back up what she sprays. Sometimes strength is in ugliness. We are looking for people who display uniqueness in style, strength of character and leadership qualities. That, to us, is true beauty anyway.
